Analysis of 3 music videos

1.    Conceptual- On Hold.

This video draws attention to the repetition of the movements to create the feeling of anger. There are no lyrics in the video, the message is portrayed through the rhythm and visual aspects. Using a lot of repetition to create the mood of the music video. It also creates hyper reality because of repetition.  The clips are made up of repeated movements, the clips are then repeated occasionally throughout the sequence. Throughout the clips it helps to build up suspense to the end clip when the door opens. The clips set the mood of anger. Each clip is synchronised to the beat. The use of close up adds emphasis to the actions, opposed to the surroundings, to enhance the effect of the suspense it creates and also the feeling of anger. Voyeurism is used when the woman is in the car with chewing gum, girl spinning with close up of her legs, girl playing with her hair incorporates the rule of thirds, the composition is good with her lips in the shot. Intertextuality when the woman is dressed up in old clothing trying to jump over the fence, man with the gun hitting someone.

2.    Performance Video- Kasabian days are forgotten

A performance video conveys a sense of in-concert experience. This is shown by the band displaying their set in the music video, similarly to what they would in a concert. The video is also quite plain but makes a bold statement to the audience as it stands out. The white lines are in time with the rhythm of the music. Close ups are used to show the instruments and for the audience to relate to the music and to draw attention to the music. The set up of the video, makes you feel as if you are watching them in a concert from varied angles. The song lyrics, beat and movement relates, for example when the amp breaks on the beginning of the chorus which shows hyper reality when the amp blows up into bits. Also the instruments are created out of white lines showing hyper reality here. At the end of the music video, the projected wires look like the sea which shows Intertextuality.

Explains to the audience that the music video represents a love story. The lyrics to the video are related to the love story, the images also represent the story as they are spending a lot of time together. The projected passing clouds shows she is on ‘cloud nine’ and then when the relationship ‘goes up in flames’ which is hyper real. When the beat gets faster, the images of drugs on show their world is beginning to become hyper real and the cigarette changes colour. Voyeurism is also shown here because as their are images of the drugs, it is also showing them taking their clothes off on a bed. ‘got to let it go’ lyrics are sung when she throws a dart at the board to show her anger, this scene shows that she has become angry towards her loved one. Between the start of the clip and the middle, the dynamics change between the two because they are loved up and then they begin to argue. From the projection of the clouds, to when they argue, the projection turns into flames to suggest her world is going up in flames. Flames communicate anger. The use of close ups in this film help to portray the emotion throughout each stage of the relationship between the two to suggest to the audience the story line. Spelling the word ‘yours’ is sparklers is hyper reality. She throws up and streamers come out being hyper real. Intertextuality is in the film such as when she is laying in the bath, the same as in Seven.

  1. In order to get a level 4 on this task you could use garage band to put dialogue over the video.
